About the pattern checker

Find the seams before your customers do.

A repeating pattern can look perfect as a single tile and still show a hard line, a gap or a stripe once it runs across a whole wall. This free checker tiles your image across a large field so those joins are easy to see. It is made by wallpaper designer Ruth Heasman for anyone preparing wallpaper, fabric, gift wrap or print-on-demand designs.

  1. 01

    Bring in your tile

Choose or drop a PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or AVIF file. Nothing is uploaded; it stays in your browser.

  2. 02

    Choose the repeat

Straight repeats line every copy up. A half-drop moves every other column down by half a tile, as many wallpapers are printed.

  3. 03

    Inspect the joins

Zoom out to spot lines and bands across the field, zoom in on the joins, and switch on tile boundaries to see exactly where each copy meets the next.

What to look for

  • Hard edges or colour steps where the tile meets itself.
  • Motifs cut off at the edge that don’t continue on the other side.
  • Bands of dark or light that show the grid from across a room.
  • A motif that lines up into accidental stripes when repeated.

Then see it on a wall

Once the repeat is clean, put it in My Drawing Room to photograph it on the walls of a lit room, or browse Ruth’s pattern collection.
